Company
We built the software we kept wishing existed on the mornings when running a pet business felt harder than it needed to: five dogs in reception, a phone ringing, and a booking system asking us to upgrade.
Why JAP exists
The software wasn't built for anyone our size.
Almost everything on the market is shaped around a chain: a dozen locations, a regional manager, someone whose whole job is the software. If you have four kennel runs and two people on shift, you feel that mismatch on day one. Half the screens are for a company you aren't, and the half you need is behind another plan.
Then there's the part that really got to us. Hire a weekend helper and the bill goes up. Take on a second groomer and it goes up again. You end up doing the maths on whether you can afford to grow, which is a strange thing for a booking tool to make you think about.
So we started over from the small end: one owner, a handful of staff, a busy morning and no patience for setup wizards.

Who we built this for
The people with a leash in one hand.
You, if you own the place, and everyone on shift with you. Boarding kennels, daycare, grooming salons, trainers, walkers and sitters. One to fifteen people, all of whom already know the dogs by name and don't need a system to tell them who Luna is.
That last bit matters to us. JAP isn't here to standardise your judgement or turn your team into ticket-closers. It handles the remembering (who's due at eleven, whose vaccination lapsed, which run is free on Friday) so the part that's actually your job gets your attention instead.
We're also honest about who we aren't for: vet clinics, pet retail and multi-site chains. There's good software for them. It isn't this.

What pricing should feel like
Nobody should pay a fee for hiring someone.
Per-seat pricing quietly turns your software into a tax on your team. We didn't want to build a business where our best month depends on you hiring your fifth person, so we priced by plan and gave every plan the whole product.
One monthly number. No feature locked away as a "module", no setup fee, no annual contract to sign before you know whether it works on a Saturday. If you need more seats or more texts than your plan includes, you add them and you can see exactly what they cost first.
Ten days free, no card. If it doesn't fit, stop. We'd rather that than have you stuck paying for something you don't open.

How we think about AI
Buddy only knows what your business already knows.
We were sceptical about putting an assistant in here at all. Most of what gets called AI in small-business software is a chatbot that confidently invents a dog named Max who has never been to your kennel.
So Buddy is deliberately narrow. It reads your records and nothing else: your bookings, your pets, your invoices. Ask it who's arriving tomorrow and it answers from the board. Ask it something it can't see, and it says so rather than filling the gap with a guess.
Most days you'll notice it as a short morning summary: who's in, who's overdue, what looks off compared to last week. That's the level we want it at: a colleague who read the diary before you got in, not a product demo.
Buddy · this morning
Six pets in today. Two arrivals before 9, one pickup at 5.
Argos' rabies record expires Friday, worth a text before he's dropped off.
I don't have anything about a pet called Max. Nothing in your records matches that name.
Read from your own records: 6 reservations, 4 pets, 1 vaccination note.

What we're still building
We're early, and we'd rather say so.
JAP is young. There are things it does well (the day board, bookings, pet records, invoicing, reminders) and things we're still shaping, usually because someone emailed us at ten at night to explain how their split-shift walking rota actually works.
That's not a stage we're trying to rush past. Being small means you can write to us and get a reply from a person who can change the thing you're complaining about, often that week. The service categories, the seat rules, the way add-ons are billed, all of it came from an owner telling us we'd got it wrong.
If you join now, you're not just using it. You're one of the people deciding what it becomes.
Come and try it on a real morning.
Ten days, no card, your own bookings in it. If something's missing or annoying, tell us, that's genuinely how most of this got built.
